TREE TUNNEL TEA TABLE

ABOUT

Tree Tunnel Tea Table is a low-rise table designed to connect people through moments of shared ritual. While created with tea ceremonies in mind, it can also function as an altar, dining surface, or adaptable gathering point. The piece is constructed from walnut, finished with Rubio Monocoat, and was completed in 2024.

DESIGN PROCESS

My design intent for this table was to subtly evoke the experience of walking through tree tunnels. For me, tree-lined paths symbolize inner transformation, marked by the mental shift that occurs when moving from one end to the other. The arched legs on each side represent individual trees curving inward to form a tunnel-like space beneath the tabletop. The low-rise profile encourages floor seating and close proximity, reinforcing a grounded and intimate gathering experience. This piece draws inspiration from traditional tea tables used in Chinese tea practice, while a contemporary retail example from Umi Tea Sets served as an early visual reference during initial research. To enhance both structure and visual interest, I alternated the thickness of each table leg, added aprons to each side, and incorporated stretchers for stability.

reflections from MAKING PROCESS

Curves are much harder to work with than straight lines and 90 degree angles, and I knew that going into it but something inexplicably drew me to this design. In the end, I have no regrets and learned so much. Although at a certain point, the individual pieces sat untouched on my worktop for several months because I was too intimidated by the glue up process for the arched legs. It took me a long time to muster up the courage to actually proceed. This project became a milestone in my journey towards personal growth, teaching me to persevere through challenging moments for something I committed to for myself. This was my first table and I’m really proud. I couldn’t have done it without my instructors and classmates, and am deeply grateful for their support.
