anniversary art frame

ABOUT

This custom art frame was built to house artwork by Jamie Issuh. Measuring 29” x 25”, the frame is constructed from walnut with contrasting maple keys reinforcing the miter joints. It was finished with Rubio Monocoat and completed in 2024.

DESIGN PROCESS

The design intent of this piece was to create a minimal yet elegant frame that supports the artwork without distracting from it. The front of the frame is sloped inward all along the inner edge, to visually guide the eyes in and invite the viewer into the piece. Maple keys on all four corners of the frame not only add strength to the mitered joints, but also add a subtle pop of visual contrast to the dark tones of walnut. The frame's internal profile dimensions were determined by taking into account the thicknesses of the glass, mat board, artwork, and backings.

reflections from MAKING PROCESS

Through making this frame, I learned about art preservation techniques and was surprised to discover how many common materials contain acids that can erode artwork over time. What initially seemed like a straightforward project turned out to be more involved than expected, but I enjoyed the process of incorporating my new knowledge of archival materials into the design of the frame’s inner profile.
